Being Well Cared for...Self-Care Ideas

Top 2 Ideas

* hand treatments (this is like a hand facial)...with all we do for our faces, the hand has become the way to tell someone's true age. What does your hand say? Ask your skin care or nail professional if they offer this service.

*Treat yourself to tea in bed, either in the morning or just before turning in for the night. Nothing makes you feel well cared for more than this, if you like tea that is! In addition, use your best china or by something special for the occassion.

I Made a List
(my list)
  • a good nights sleep
  • drinking enough water
  • meeting my spiritual needs
  • walking three mornings a week
  • yoga (this is one I wish I did more often!)
  • spending uninterrupted time with my kids/husband
  • making time for family/friends
  • dinner with a girlfriend
  • getting a massage and facial monthly
  • having my hair and nails done as needed
  • cooking/entertaining/time for my music
  • spending time alone

All of these are difficult to keep up with when I am so busy; however, I know that if I don't give to myself, the other parts of my life will ultimately suffer. So, the items on my list are constantly on my mind.

A List of Ideas for You
  • sleep: It's true that we need two-four hour sessions of REM equaling eight hours. Most humans; however, take some time falling asleep and getting back to sleep between sessions. Lack of sleep affects your diet, mind, and your health.
  • water: Divide your body weight by 2, that equals the number of ounces of water you need daily. If you are thirsty, then you are actually dehydrated. 33% of Americans are so dehydrated that their body sends hunger signals in a desperate search for water...leading to overeating. Drinking too little water slows down your metabolism and the body's ability to burn fat.
  • diet: Eating less than your body's minimum daily requirement actually causes your body to store fat rather than lose it. This feast-or-famine response kicks in the moment your daily calorie intake drops too low. Don't starve yourself, and don't skip meals. Eat at least 1,400 calories each day, including enough protein(weight in pounds ÷ 2 = grams of protein/day) and enough fiber( 2-4 pieces of fresh fruit and 2-4 cups of steamed or raw vegetables daily).
  • nurture you spiritual side: whatever that may be for you.
  • exercise: This, for me, is the toughest one to maintain, but I am always trying. I think the best idea I found is to have a workout partner. If I know someone is waiting for me, I'm more apt to show up! Remember, exercising 25 minutes or less helps you maintain your current weight, but not lose weight or excess fat. The first 25 minutes of aerobic exercise burns glucose (sugar), but not fat. The exercise that counts as far as losing weight only kicks in at 26 minutes, at your target heart rate.
  • social time: Humans are social creatures. Make sure you make time for those people important to you. It's very important to set dates, as time flies by so quickly.
  • maintenance: Male or female, we all feel better when we've had our hair done or after that soothing massage. But did you know that everyone's body operates on a system of approximately 28 days. This, of course, varies among people. Therefore, if you tend to need your roots done every four weeks, then that's around the same timing for your massage, facial, or pedicure, as the beneficial affects of these services wear off at about the same time. Manicures and artificial nails are done more frequently, based on the nail's growth rate. So, try keeping up with a maintenance schedule that works for you to help you look and feel your best.
  • Hobbies: So many people think they don't have a creative bone in their body, but I beg to differ. Everyone has something...we just tend to compare ourselves to other people causing us to feel that way. Reading this may bring that something to mind. If so, a hobbie is for you, and you don't have to share it with anyone else, if you don't want to, but try to set time aside for it, at least every week.
  • Alone time: As social as we are, we also need time for ourselves. There's no set rule on how much that time should be, so it's up to you. Even spending fifteen minutes reading a part of that book you can't seem to find time to read or the morning newspaper will work. I especially enjoy taking a 20 minute candle lit(lavender scented) bath, in the evening. I use either the So Dreamy body soak, by Satisfaction, and/or their body oil in the same scent, to relax my mind...of course, the glass of wine I take along helps, too. My favorite choice there would be August Kessler's Reisling (you can find it at AJ's).
